FCC’s Pai launches rulemaking process for ATSC 3.0 rollout

After a lengthy wait for the FCC to initiate a Notice of Proposed Rulemaking (NPRM) on ATSC 3.0, newly appointed Chairman Ajit Pai today got the ball rolling.

FCC Takes First Big Step Toward Adopting 3.0

The commission releases a draft of its proposal for authorizing the voluntary deployment of the Next Gen standard, prior to the vote set for Feb. 23. The action is the first part of a new pilot program announced today by Chariman Ajit Pai to increase agency transparency by making documents public prior to voting by the full commission.

AT&T Repack Plan Getting Positive Reviews

A new plan from AT&T on how best to repack television stations on a regional basis following completion of the incentive auction has received kudos from parts of the TV industry knowledgeable about what will be required. However, there appears to be a few missing pieces, the most glaring of which is the lack of leadership to shepherd the TV broadcasters, tower crews, vendors and others through the process.
